A Brief History Of My family

My family surname is LU. My paternal grandfather was named Sang Shen (rise of esteem), and my grandmother was from the TEO clan. They were both from the region around the city of Nanping in Fujian province. My father was born to them in 1932 in China. His name was Zhen Qian (exert authority), a member of the Zhen and Yu generation. He had an elder sister and an adopted younger brother. While at a young age, they followed my grand-parents to South East Asia. As a family, they initially made a living in the Malayan state of Perak as rural travelling merchant dealing with fabrics and imported goods. In early 1939 the then British colony was convulsed in waves of anti-Chinese violence in the rural areas. To escape the persecutions, they fled to the district capital and eventually sattled in and setup shop. In the year 1951 my father married my mother (Ting Muo Li, meaning Jasmine). She was just eighteen at that time.An earlier photo

I was born in the tail end of 1952, and father named me Liang Hui (benign light), and designated Gao Siang (high glider). I belong to the Liang and Lian generation. In the family I had two younger sisters, the elder was born in 1959 and named Hui Ling, the younger was born 1964 and named Hui Shan. They are both married presently. According to father, my family has a history of producing just one single male heir, so there was no compulsion to try for another boy after my birth.

In my youth I read Pharmacy at the University of Singapore (the National University of Singapore in present day). After graduation in 1976, I started work as a pharmacist for some years, but in 1981 switched career to Information Technology. Hitherto it’s been over twenty years. I met He Wan Shen (Ho Yuen Sing in Cantonese, meaning gentle and graceful voice), my wife-to-be at work. She was mild mannered and affable, and had the makings of a wise wife and great mother, not to mention her close considerations for my well-being. I really count myself lucky to have won her favour. We were married in under three years. With her I have two boys. The elder was born in 1986, the bing-yin year of Tiger. We named him Zi Xian (initiation of wisdom), and the unconferred designation of Pin Gen (to study the mountain, the dominion of tigers). Despite his birth sign, he is mild tempered, more like a house cat. The younger son was born in 1988, the wu-chen year of Dragon. We named him Zi Yuan (source of a deep lake), and the unconferred designation of Tou Kan (to fathom the watery depth , the dominion of dragons). He is both curios and enthusiastic. With the two boys, I had broken out of the precedence of single male heir for many generations, and my father was mighty pleased about it.

Apart from all these, we also have six cats in the family, three males and three females. They are all deeply loved by us as part of the family.
